School Memory

When I was in second grade in the morning we would always line upon the ramp by the entrance to go upstairs to class. one day all of the girls in my class decided tat it would be a good idea to gang up on the boys and beat them up. we all huddled up like it was a football game and each girl chose a boy that they'd beat up. the plan was made and we were on the attack. I remember i beat up christian, i pushed him on the ground and kicked him in the nuts. i felt bad after i did it because christian was one of my friends. then our teacher Ms. Skelly came down and yelled for us to stop. we all stopped dead in our tracks because we had never herd her yell before. she took us up to the class room and told us she was very disappointed in us all, even the boys, i thought that was funny because they didn't do anything.

Apartheid

Apartheid began in South Africa in 1948 by the Dutch, it was legal segregation of the native blacks and Indians from India from the whites. It lasted until 1994. The government segregated education, medical care, beaches, and other public places. The 'minorities' (Blacks, Indians) were only allowed to work certian jobs for incredably low wadges. The government told them what they could do and where they were allowed to go. Protests began in South Africa over Apartheid, one of the main leaders for these protests was Nelson Mandela, who spnt 27 years in prison as a political prisoner, where most of his time served was on Robben Island. After the negociations to end Apartheid in 1994 happened Nelson Mandela became the president of South Africa in the new democratic elections.

Something that inspires you

I believe that everyone has something or someone that inspires them. It could be your favorite song, poem, actor, or family member. What inspires me is a song called “Born This Way” by Lady Gaga. The whole message of the song is that your perfect the way you are, hold your head up and be who you are, “I'm beautiful in my way, 'Cause God makes no mistakes.”
Saying Lady Gaga is different is an understatement to most people, she wears very strange outfits everywhere she goes, even her music videos are down right odd but she is just being who she is, that’s what her song “Born This Way” talks about. In high school she was one of those kids that was bullied and picked on because she had a very big nose, very curly brown hair, and was overweight. Gaga said “I want to create a space for my fans where they can feel free, and they can celebrate. I didn't fit in at high school, I wanted to be like Boy George and I felt like a freak. So I like to create this atmosphere for my fans where they feel like they have a freak in me to hang out with, and they don't feel alone." In the song it says “I'm beautiful in my way 'Cause God makes no mistakes, I'm on the right track baby, I was born this way, Don't hide yourself in regret, Just love yourself and you're set, I'm on the right track baby I was born this way” This line of the song is what inspires me the most, it says your beautiful the way you are, don’t hide who you are, and love yourself.

The Guest: question

1. i think now that Daru has been threatened that the native people will destroy the school house and drive Daru off the plateau or kill him.
      -the Arab killed his cousin
-balducci brought the Arab to Daru because he was suppose to bring him to the jail.

2. i think the Arab chose to go to prison rather than go free was because Daru treated him like a guest rather than a prisoner and gave him the option to do the right thing and face the consequences of his actions.

5. what is ironic at the end of the story is that Daru gives the prisoner the choice to go to jail or go free and the prisoner chooses to go to jail.

3. Daru's main conflict is that hes told he has a duty to France during upcoming war time, he doesn't like that the Arab killed someone, and he doesn't feel like its his job to deliver the Arab to prison.

7. if Daru escorted the Arab to the nomads he would have regretted making that decision because he thought that it was wrong for the Arab to kill someone.

The Guest by Albert Camus

Pause and Reflect: Why is life so difficult for Daru's pupils and their families?

Life for Daru's pupils and their families is so difficult because they're all poor and live on top of a plateau and there was a drought so non of the families can grow crops to support their families.
